Rajshahi University (RU) teachers and students under banner of Muktijoddhar Santan in a memorandum to chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed yesterday demanded punishment of Jamaat-Shibir cadres who assaulted freedom fighter Sheikh Mohammad Ali for seeking trial of war criminals. They also demanded immediate ban on so-called Jatiya Muktijoddha Parishad backed by Jamaat as their leaders made derogatory comments about the Liberation War of Bangladesh. The memorandum was sent through fax. Earlier, anti-liberation forces assaulted many freedom fighters and progressive people in the country. Previous governments did not take any action against them, the memo said. 'We express our deep concern observing caretaker government's indifference in taking action against them after passing several days of the incident', they said. 'We feel the fundamentalist forces showed arrogance as no trial against the war criminals was held after 37 years of independence', they said. Muktijoddhar Santan gave an ultimatum to the government for action against the culprits within July 21, otherwise, they threatened that general students would launch a tougher agitation against the government. They submitted copies of memorandum to vice chancellor, students' advisor and university proctor. Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) in a statement in Rajshahi yesterday called upon the government to initiate trial of war criminals immediately and take steps to ban Jamaat-Shibir politics. BSD demanded punishment to Jamaat-Shibir cadres for assaulting freedom fighter Mohammad Ali.
