Eco-friendly innovations
The press report from Tokyo, where the G-8 recently met, published in a local English daily on July 8 should be an eye-opener for us. It was a showcase of innovations presented by the Japanese; utilising nature to develop eco-friendly facilities for comfortable living. Alongside were highly energy efficient machines to cut down carbon emission to the atmosphere.
Automakers were offering rides in their latest on-the-road hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles, which are both fuel efficient and eco-friendly!
Meanwhile, police officers were scooting along on two wheeled scooters; miles ahead in energy efficiency and pollution free compared to the traditional police motorbikes that guzzle petrol and are extremely noisy!
Also on display for journalists and international visitors was a zero carbon emission house! On display was an innovative solution to summer air conditioning; utilising winter snow preserved under the floor, to provide natural power free cooling in summer. The display building walls had plants and wooden insulation type boards inside, and solar panels outside. Further the summer heat outside was reduced by artificial mist, curtailing direct sun rays on the building for more comfort.
All these are extremely intelligent, eco-friendly and energy saving ideas that improve comfort as well as reduce power costs! For us in Bangladesh, we should go all out for these innovations and set up contacts with the Japanese makers to get these equipment. Hybrid and fuel cell vehicles will save a huge amount of costly and imported petroleum for the transport sector in the country. Our policemen should use the energy saving two-wheeled scooters, and do away with the expensive and noisy motorcycles now in use.
It is high time that we wake up, to go all out on top priority for these pragmatic realities in energy savings that can be implemented if the government is fully committed to it.
