500 landless people besiege Badarganj UNO office
About 500 landless people of Bishnapur and Lohanipara unions in Badarganj upazila laid siege to the office of the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and staged a sit-in demonstration yesterday in protest against an eviction drive.
Leaders of the landless living on lands of the Forest Department met UNO Zakir Hossain and requested him to stop the eviction drive until their proper rehabilitation by the government.
About 1,200 landless families were living on the land for a long time. The deputy commissioner of Rangpur served a notice to them asking to shift their houses elsewhere by July 17.
However, the UNO told newsmen that the administration had suspended the eviction drive for one month on humanitarian ground. 'The landless may shift their houses elsewhere during the period,' he said.
But the programme of the landless which started at 10:00 in the morning continued till filing of the report yesterday afternoon.
