Delimitation Of 2 Constituencies Protested
65,000 to boycott JS vote in B'baria
At least 65,000 voters in Budunti, Chandura and Harashpur unions in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila will not cast their votes in the next general election protesting delimitation of Brahmanbaria2 and Brahmanbaria-3 constituencies, their leaders said at a press conference here yesterday.
Their representatives included local leaders of political parties, Union Parishad chairmen and members and convener of a newly formed body styled Titas Purbanchal Thana Bastobayon Committee.
Convener of the committee Md. Kutub Uddin Salim read out a written statement at the press conference, held at Brahmanabria Press Club.
A large number of people from Bdhumti, Chandura and Haraspur unions were also present at the press conference.
In the recent delimitation by Election Commission, the three unions, close to Brahmanbaria Sadar, have been included in Brahmanbaria-1 constituency, which is far away from their areas, Kutub Uddin told the press conference.
They said they will go for tougher agitation if the delimitation of constituencies is not cancelled.
Earlier, Brahmanbaria1 seat comprised only Nasirnagar upazila and Brahmanbaria2 covered Sarail upazila and two union of Sadar upazila--Bdhumti and Chandura. Brahmanbaria3 comprised the rest unions including Haraspur of Brahmanaria Sadar upazila.
In the new delimitation, Bdhumti, Chandura and Haraspur unions of Sadar upazila have been included in Brahmanbaria1 seat.
They said, traditionally, people of the three unions are not 'socially and geographically involved' with people of Nasirnagar upazila as it is a 'backward area' for them.
They demanded cancellation of delimitation of Brahmanbaria-1 constituency and revert of their areas to Brahmanbaria2 and Brahmanbaria-3 constituencies. Bdhumti and Chandura union should be under Brahmanbaria-2 and Haraspur union under Brahmanbaria 3, as was before, they said.
To press the demand, a large number of people of the area held a public meeting at Chandura on July 12, submitted a memorandum to the Chief Election Commissioner through the local administration and formed a committee to realise it.
People of the area will form a human chain on Monday, they said at the press conference.
The Election Commission has delimited four of the six parliamentary seats in the district. These are Brahmanbaria1, Brahmanbaria2, Brahmanbaria5 and Brahmanbaria 6. Brahmanbaria-3 and Brahmanbaria-4 are as they were.
Now, Brahmanbaria1 comprises Nasirnagar upazial and Bdhumti, Chandura and Haraspur unions of Brahmanabria Sadar upazila.
Brahmanbaria2 covers Sarail upazila and Ashuganj upazilas and three unions --Mazilshpur, Budhal and Talshar Purba--of Sadar upazila.
Brahmanbaria5 cover Nabinagar upazial except Barikandi and Chalimganj unions.
Brahmanbaria6 covers Bancharampur upazila and Barikandi and Chalimganj unions of Nabinagar upazila.
While asked, convener of the newly formed committee said that they will continue agitation till the EC restores previous areas of Brahmanbaria 1, Brahmanbaria 2 and Brahmanbaria 3 constituencies.
