Khulna mayoral contenders vow to fight crime
Five mayoral candidates for August 4 polls to Khulna City Corporation (KCC) yesterday pledged that they would, if elected to the post, eradicate criminal activities and drug trafficking from the city.
The five mayoral candidates, who spoke from the same dais, are -- BNP leader and acting mayor Moniruzzaman Moni, Khulna City Awami League President and 14-party nominated candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Communist Party of Bangladesh leader advocate Firoze Ahmed, Muslim League leader advocate Moslemuddin and shrimp trader Sheikh Taibur Rahman.
At a dialogue held at Khulna Press Club by Khulna Citizens' Forum, they also pledged that they would make the KCC a corruption-free body and increase civic amenities to improve the dwellers' standard of living.
The mayoral candidates also pledged to work for developing Mongla seaport and Mongla EPZ, and reopening of closed mills.
They replied to questions from participants including leaders of different socio-cultural organisations.
Another AL leader contesting for mayoral post, advocate Enayet Ali did not attend the dialogue reportedly on health ground.
Meanwhile, Khulna Metropolitan Police has sent a list of three mayoral candidates---Khaleque, Firoze and Moni -- and 29 councilor candidates to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Election Commission Secretariat.
The ministry had asked for their background following different allegations against.
