Negate corrupt people thru' ballot
Prof Muzaffer tells Manikganj polls projection meeting
Prof Muzaffer Ahmad, president of Shushashoner Janney Nagorik (Shujan) yesterday urged people to vote for honest, competent and reliable candidates for development of the areas.
“We have to work together for establishing democracy at the grassroots level,” he said at an open discussion titled 'Janatar Mukhomukhi' (face the people) at Captain Abdul Halim Chowdhury auditorium at Manikganj.
Shujon Manikngaj district unit, Sachetan Nagorik Samaj of Manikganj and Prothom Alo Bandhusava jointly organised the programme for the candidates running for local municipality polls scheduled for August 4. The Daily Star, Prothom Alo and Channel-i were media partners of the programme.
“We have to work for a strong local government. Most of the people are good and honest. So it will not be difficult to overcome odd created by a few criminals and corrupt people,” said Sultana Kamal, a former advisor to the caretaker government.
Shujon secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumder, who moderated the programme, said corrupt politicians snatched the rights of people over the years in the past and now time has come to give them a befitting reply in the coming polls.
He said the voters should be more vigil so that the candidates cannot use their muscle power and black money to win the election.
Mayoral candidates Sudev Saha, Nasir Uddin Ahmed Jadu, Mosharraf Hossain Babul, GM Rafi Apu, Billal Hossain, Kashem Chowdhury, and ATM Shahjahan, representative of detained candidate Romjan Ali, attended the programme.
The candidates pledged to devote themselves for the development of the municipality area and making the municipality corruption-free, if elected.
They said they would work to stop child marriage, dowry system and other crimes.
Town dwellers including students, teachers and traders took part in the discussion.
Prof AAA Asaduzzaman, president of Manikganj chapter of Shujon, presided over the function where Sekendar Ali Mandal, additional secretary to the government, Mofizul Islam Khan Kamal, convener of Sachetan Nagorik Samaj in Manikganj, Aminur Rahman Anjan, president of Manikganj unit of Prothom Alo Bandhusava, also addressed.
