Khulna TIB workshop urges parties
Speakers at a workshop held here yesterday urged political parties to nominate honest people in next parliamentary election.
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) organised the workshop, 'Parliament and Citizens' Charter on Lawmakers' in collaboration with Sachetan Nagorik Committee.
Held at a city hotel, the workshop was presided by Khulna Shachetan Nagorik Committee convenor Md Hafizur Rahman.
Speakers said voters have their right to know qualification, wealth and details of personal background of probable lawmakers.
Besides, a code of conduct should be framed for lawmakers and political parties to make them accountable to people, they said.
Election Commission (EC) and civic society have equal responsibility to take necessary initiatives for ensuring transparency of political parties and parliament.
Earlier, TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said role and usefulness of parliament is still being questioned even after 17 years of introduction of parliamentary system of democracy in the country. He said accountability of government could not ensured as parliament suffered due to crisis of quorum and ineffectiveness of parliamentary standing committees.
Violence and impatience, commercialisation and criminalisation of politics and dependence on muscle power made political culture in the country most unstable, he said.
TIB undertook a research work keeping in view the upcoming parliamentary elections. The research was aimed at framing citizens' charter about expectation of people from lawmakers and parliament, he said.
Speakers discussed at length matters relating to role of lawmakers towards people who voted them to parliament and how to mobilise people's opinions before enacting law or bringing amendment to it.
