Delimitation Of Js Seats Protested
Dhaka-Sylhet highway blocked in B'baria
About 15,000 people of Budunti, Chandura and Harashpur unions in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila yesterday blocked the DhakaSylhet highway for one and a half hours by forming a human chain to protest delimitation of Brahmanbaria 2 and 3 constituencies.
They demanded of the Election Commission (EC) authorities to restore their previous constituencies.
From morning, thousands of processionists led by chairmen and members of the three unions gathered on the highway at Shathbarga and Chandura points.
Later, they held a meeting at Chandura which turned into a grand rally. Titas Purbanchal Thana Bastobayon Committee convener Md Kutub Uddin Salim chaired the grand rally addressed by local leaders including chairmen and members of the three unions.
Speakers said there are about 65,000 voters in the three unions. The area is near to the district headquarters. Ignoring people's hopes and aspirations, their Unions were included with Brahmanbaria 1 (Nasirnagar upazila) and Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail upazila including Badhumti and Chandura unions of Brahmanabria Sadar upazila) constituencies, far away from Sadar uapazila.
They threatened that they will not cast their votes in the next election if the EC does not change the decision.
They also held a press conference at Brahmanabria Press Club where they announced a tougher agitation programme to press home their demands.
People of the three unions are socially and geographically detached from Nasirnagar upazila, a backward area, they said. Terming it a deep conspiracy, they said people of the unions will foil the conspiracy through tougher agitation.
Earlier, a grand public meeting was held at Chandura on July 12. People also submitted a prayer signed by five persons including three related UP chairman to CEC. They also held a press conference and formed a committee to fight legally against the evil design.
Brahmanbaria 3 constituency comprised the rest unions including Haraspur union of Brahmanaria Sadar upazila. But now it has been changed by the EC.
If the EC does not include Bdhumti union and Chandura union with Brahmanbaria 2 and Haraspur union with Brahmanbaria 3, people will hold a tougher agitation programme including disruption of traffic on the highway.
EC already delimitated four out of six constituencies in the district.
The newly-formed constituencies are Brahmanbaria 1, Brahmanbaria 2, Brahmanbaria 5 and Brahmanbaria 6.
Now Brahmanbaria 1 consists of Nasirnagar upazial and Bdhumti union and Chandura union and Haraspur union of Brahmanabria Sadar upazila.
Brahmanbaria 2 consists of Sarail upazila, Ashuganj upazila and Mazilshpur union, Budhal union and Talshar Purba Union of Brahmanaria Sadar upazila.
Brahmanbaria 5 consists of Nabinagar upazila subtracting two unions --- Barikandi union and Chalimganj union of Nabinagar upazila.
Brahmanbaria 6 consists of Bancharampur upazila including Barikandi and Chalimganj unions of Nabinagar upazila.
