Charges against Babul, 5 others being probed
Law enforcers have started probe into allegations of violation of electoral rules by a mayoral candidates and five councilor aspirants in Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) election.
The accused are 'rebel' Awami League leader and mayoral candidate former pourashava chairman Babrul Hossain Babul, and councillor candidates MA Mugni Khoka in ward no. 5, Mujibur Rahman Niru in ward no. 7, Abul Hossain Babul in Ward no. 26, and contenders for women's reserve seats Ruhena Akhtar Mukta and Nurun Nahar Begum Moyna.
Police caught six members of a band party along with the driver of a truck as they were campaigning for Babrul Hossain Babul Monday night in Shibganj area, violating election rules. The truck was also seized.
MA Mugni faces allegation of hiding information about his marriage. A formaer ward commissioner of the then Sylhet porashava, coulcillor sandidate Najibur Rahman Niru is accused for attacking and threatening his rivals.
Violating election rules, Abul Hossain Babul arranged feeding 400 to 500 people.
Woman councilor candidate Rumena Begum faces the allegation of being locked in a clash with her rival. The other women councilor candidate --Nurun nahar Begum Moynaallegedly gave fake information during campaign, sources said.
If the allegations are found correct, their candidature may be cancelled, an official said.
Sylhet Divisional Deputy Election Commissioner Khondker Mizanur Rahman, also returning officer for SCC polls, told The Daily Star yesterday after investigation, police will file report with judicial magistrate court.
