Freedom fighters, Nirmul Committee hold rally, discussion

Speakers including political party leaders and freedom fighters here yesterday called for joining the on-going movement for trial of war criminals to uphold the spirit of Liberation war. Freedom Fighter Sheikh Muhammad Ali Aman, who was assaulted in Dhaka by Jamaat-Shibir cadres two weeks ago, also joined the programmes held marking the 14th anniversary of 'Golam Azam Protirodh Dibash'. Five persons including three students--Ehsanul Hoque Moni, Titu Ray, Jafar-- were killed in the port city when Jamaat cadres opened indiscriminate fire on a procession protesting arrival of the then Jamaat chief Golam Azam here on July 26 in 1994. Activists of different political parties and socio-cultural organisations accorded a warm when Freedom Fighter Muhammad Ali arrived in the post city to join the programmes. He also addressed a gathering prior to formation of a human chain at the central shaheed minar here Central leaders of Nirmul Committee participated in a discussion on 'Demand for Trial of War Criminals: Role of Political Parties and Citizen Groups', held at Studio Theatre auditorium. Speakers there demanded punishment of the culprits who assaulted freedom fighter Mohammad Ali Aman for seeking trial of war criminals. They expressed their resentment over alleged government inaction in arresting the Jamaat-Shibir cadres after two weeks of assault of Freedom Fighter Mohammad Ali. Ali was assaulted at a gathering of some fake freedom fighters under the banner of Jamaat-backed 'Jatiya Muktijoddha Parishad', held in the capital on July 11. General secretary of Dhaka University Teachers' Association Prof Dr Md Anwar Hossain was the chief guest at the discussion while Nirmul Committee's Chittagong unit coordinator Mahfujur Rahman was in the chair. Its central acting president and writer Shahriar Kabir and Freedom Fighter Mohammad Ali were present as special guests. Prof Anwar Hossain urged all pro-liberation forces to unite to resist enemies of country's independence. He criticised the caretaker government for not taking any action against those who assaulted a freedom fighter, saying, “It is not understandable why it (caretaker government) is soft on Jamaat”. He said law enforcing agencies swung into action promptly during the unrest at Dhaka University last year and arrested students and teachers but this time their inaction in arresting Jamaat-Shibir cadres has given rise to questions. Shahriar Kabir said pro-liberation forces should resist any attempt by war criminals to take part in next general election. If political parties withdraw supporting from Jamaat and their foreign help spots, it would be difficult for them (Jamaat) to do politics in the country, he said. Speaking on the occasion, Freedom Fighter Mohammad Ali expressed said, now it is a moral and patriotic duty of all to join the movement for trial of war criminals. Later talking to The Daily Star, he said Jamaat-Shibir cadres have proved that they are still against the spirit of Liberation War. “I joined the Liberation War when I was a student of class X and now at the age of 55, my hatred against them is as it was. Every body knows what Jamaat backed Rajakar, Al Badr and Al Shams did during the war”. “I will fight to the last for trial of war criminals and do not care if they kill me”.
