Lift emergency, hold national polls first
Magura BNP demands
Grass-roots level leaders of Magura district BNP yesterday urged the government to announce schedule for national election and withdraw the state of emergency without further delay.
Withdrawal of the emergency is a must to make the ongoing political dialogue a success and to create a congenial atmosphere for holding a credible election with participation of all political parties, they told a meeting of Magura district BNP at its office in the town.
The government has lifted ban on indoor politics, but the reality is totally different as political party activists at district and upazila levels are being constantly shadowed by special security agencies, the leaders alleged.
This is not a suitable atmosphere for election, they said and urged the government to take steps to remove fear from people's mind.
Demanding unconditional release of all political leaders including party chairperson Khaleda Zia and her elder son Tarique Rahman, they said, delaying their release gives rise to questions in people's mind that the government intends to stay in power for a longer period.
Calling for resisting planned upazila parishad elections, they said any other polls before general election would not be accepted.
They also criticised the government for price hike of essentials and called for bringing down it within people's buying capacity.
District and thana level BNP leaders who spoke at the meeting said, the future elected government will conduct investigation into corruption, if any, done by the present government.
With joint-convener of district BNP Nazimuddin Ahmed in the chair, Zia Parishad central committee chairman Kabir Murad spoke the meeting as the chief guest. The meeting was also addressed by district BNP leaders.
