Sylhet election officials' training starts today
With only a week to the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) polls, preparations are almost at the final stage.
The Election Commission today starts a three-day training for the 2600 officials, selected to serve as presiding officers and polling officers. Every day 900 officials will be given daylong training on the electoral rules. It will be held at the city's Madan Mohan College.
Fifteen persons are contesting for the SCC mayoral post while 197 persons are in the race for 27 posts of ward councillorship.
There are 46 candidates for nine reserved seats for female representatives.
“We are busy making the last time preparations. The highest number of 980 observers, including several from eight international bodies and organizations, have got their names listed to monitor the polls in Sylhet this time,” Deputy Election Commissioner, Sylhet -- Khondker Mizanur Rahman, also the returning officer for the SCC polls, told The Daily Star yesterday.
An eight-member vigilance team headed by the deputy election commissioner has been working to look into the complaints on the election rules violation.
“Of the total 120 polling centres, 98 have been marked vulnerable -- 67 are most vulnerable and 31 less vulnerable. The list has been prepared considering the previous records of incidents and the location of the centres,” Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Syed Toufique Uddin Ahmed said
Normally, deployment of police force varies in cases of the vulnerable and the less vulnerable ones than the rest normal centres, the official said.
However, another agency has listed 20 centres as vulnerable including 10 most vulnerable.
There are 2,56,480 voters, including 1,39,727 male and 1,16,753 female, under the SSC.
