'Land to landless is a constitutional right'
Kaliganj landless people hold memorial meeting for their leader Jayeda Khatun
Over 5000 landless people at a memorial meeting yesterday urged the government to distribute khas lands among landless people, saying it is their constitutional right.
They also demanded arrest and punishment of land grabbers who shot dead Shaheed Jayeda Khatun, a leader of landless people at Baburabad in Kaliganj upazila on July 27 in 1998 as the landless demanded khas land.
The memorial meeting organised by Kaliganj-Debhata Bhumihin Sangram Committee, was held at the site of the graveyard of Shaheed Jayeda at Baburabad in observance of her 10th death anniversary. Kaliganj-Debhata Bhumihin Sangram Committee President Md Wahab Ali Sardar was in the chair.
Satkhira district Bhumihin Uchched Pratirodh Sangram Samannoy Committee (committee to resist eviction of landless people) president advocate Abdur Rahim was the chief guest while its vice-president freedom fighter Prof Abu Ahmed and Nalta Union Parishad (UP) chairman Ansar Ali were special guests.
It was addressed by, among others, freedom fighter Sardar Kajem Ali, Maniruzzaman, Rafiqul Islam, Abdul Aziz, Sirajul Islam, Abdul Bari.
Paying rich tributes to Shaheed Jayeda, they said sacrifice of Shaheed Jayeda will not go in vain as landless people will get their rights of khas lands through movement.
They said, the landless people should unite to press their rights to khas lands.
Unity of landless people can force land grabbers out of khas lands, they said.
They also vowed to continue agitation for distribution of government khas lands among landless people in the areas.
They also urged the landless people to remain vigilant against alleged conspiracies by vested quarters to grab government khas lands.
The demanded withdrawal of false cases filed against land less people, arrest of land grabbers, distribution of khas land among landless people.
