Khulna mayoral runners pledge to develop city, make it graft-free
All six mayoral candidates in Khulna City Corporation have pledged to work for development of Khulna City Corporation and freeing the city from corruption, if elected to the post.
The mayoral candidates made the commitment in reply to queries in the BBC-initiated electoral dialogue held at Zia Hall in the city on Sunday evening.
Mayoral candidates Awami League leader Talukder Abdul Khaleque, BNP leader Moniruzzaman Moni, also the acting mayor, Awami League leader advocate Enayet Ali, CPB leader advocate Feroze Ahmed, Muslim League leader advocate Moslemuddin and Prof Taibur Rahman took part in the dialogue that was broadcast live by BTV.
Replying to questions separately, the mayoral candidates pledged to give top priorities to address major problems of city dwellers such as crisis of pure drinking water, installation of surface water treatment plant, solving water-logging problem and improving drainage system.
Talukder Abdul Khaleque said, if elected, he would try his best to free KCC from corruption and politicisation and in case of failure he would resign from the post.
Referring to 'a good number of projects' taken up during his tenure as acting mayor, Moniruzzaman Moni said as a freedom fighter he had always worked for welfare of the people during his political career.
Advocate Enayet Ali, also chairman of the then Khulna Pourasava, said he would never compromise on matters of principles so far as holding the image of KCC is concerned.
Advocate Firoze Ahmed said he would, if elected, stand by the side of the industrial workers and slum dwellers to provide them with facilities necessary for their subsistence and better living.
Advocate Moslemuddin said he would, if elected, try his level best to equip KCC with honest and experienced staff.
Taibur Rahman said he would do whatever possible without any political ambition to make the KCC a model in the country.
The six mayoral candidates said they would work for resolving severe power crisis and improving road and communication system on priority basis, if elected.
