Army Initiative To Combat Monga
2nd round of fisheries project in Teesta canals begins
The second round of a fisheries project initiated by Army chief General Moeen U Ahmed in the Teesta main canal and its two branches began here Monday on successful completion of the first round of the project in July.
222, Brigade Commander Brig Gen Abu Belal Md Safiul Haque inaugurated the second round of the project yesterday by formally releasing fries along the 5-kilometre portion of Chanderhat Horish Chandrapat segment of the Teesta branch canal.
General Moeen initiated the project aiming at combating monga, a near famine situation, caused due to lack of job in the region at a certain period of the year.
A total of 101-kilometre area of the Teesta main canal and its two branches were brought under the second round of the project.
About 4.5 metric tons of fries would be released in phases in the aforesaid area. Fry like Grass Carp (scientific name Ctenopharyngo Idella), Ruhi (Labeo Rohita), Sarputi (Puntious Gonionotus), Katla (Catla) were released in proportion of 40:30:25:5.
Releasing of fry in 12 other segments will take place gradually.
About 15,000 ultra-poor people are likely to be benefitted from the second round of the project.
While talking to beneficiaries, Brig Gen Abu Belal said the success of the first round of the project has proved to be an effective means to combat monga in the region. He said the fisheries project in the Teesta canals is a continuous process.
Among others, Nilphamari Deputy Commissioner Rashidul Hasan, District Fisheries Officer GI Golder, Nilphamari district army camp Commander Lt Col Sazzad Hossain, local body representatives and others were present at the inaugural function.
