Returning officer tells EC secretary in letter
The deputy election commissioner of Khulna, who is also the returning officer for Khulna City Corporation (KCC) elections, in an official letter to the Election Commission secretary has accused all the six mayoral candidates in KCC elections of violating electoral code of conduct.
Six mayoral candidates in KCC elections were present in a July 23 dialogue on the premises of Crescent Jute Mills at Khalishpur, Deputy Election Commissioner Md Mohsin Ali said in the letter sent to the EC secretary on Tuesday.
At the dialogue arranged by 'State-owned Jute Mills Development Committee', the mayoral candidates expressed full support for eight-point demands of workers and indefinite hunger strike that began on Sunday.
Khalishpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Sayedur Rahman filed a general diary (GD) alleging violation of electoral code of conduct against the mayoral candidates and informed the deputy election commissioner of this matter on July 24.
Sonadanga Police Station OC Kayyum Hossain filed another GD accusing BNP mayoral candidate and acting Mayor Moniruzzaman Moni of violating electoral code of conduct on Sunday.
At 10:00am that day, Moni was present as special guest at a discussion jointly organised by KCC-run school and madrasa management committees at the Zia hall.
Speakers of the discussion meeting sought votes from participants for Moni in his presence clearly violating electoral code of conduct, Sonadanga Police Station OC alleged in his GD.
He sent a photocopy of his GD along with a written petition to the deputy election commissioner for necessary action on Monday.
Md Mohosin Ali, who is also returning officer for KCC elections, in his letter to the EC secretary on Tuesday asked for necessary action against Moni for violating electoral code of conduct by seeking votes from participants of a discussion meeting.
Platinum and Crescent jute mills lost at least seven tonnes of production due to work stoppage by workers for two hours from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on July 23 as they attended the dialogue, sources said.
