Security beefed up at Mongla Port as dockworkers agitate
Security measures have been streagthened at Mongla Port where dockworkers threw a programme from last Monday as preparation for launching movement in protest against introduction of berth operating system from August 1.
Police dispersed dockworkers who staged sit-in in front of Mongla Port gang booking office at 9:00pm on Tuesday.
Mongla Port Authority is still determined to implement the newly introduced berth operating system with abolition of Dock Workers' Management Board.
High tension is prevailing at Mongla Port as over 3,000 dockworkers are in fear of losing their jobs from the day of implementation of the new system.
“The dockworkers are no longer under control of The Dock Workers' Management Board as the government has abolished it. The workers will now be directly appointed by the stevedores,” said Lutfor Rahman, member (Operation) of Mongla Port Authority.
It will take some more time to implement berth operating system but direct appointment of dockworkers will come into force from August 1, he said, adding that a six-member committee has been formed to fix up financial involvement required for payment of dues of outgoing dockworkers.
