A few city corpn polls rules impractical

Awami League Advisory Committee member AMA Muhith yesterday said several provisions in the rule for the city corporation polls are misguiding, impractical and inconsistent.
Barring election rallies on roundabouts on public roads and use of loudspeakers after evening are impractical decisions, he said at a press conference at Sylhet Press Club.
Nagorik Parishad, which fielded incumbent Sylhet mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran for the mayoral run, organised the press conference.
Questioning the justifiability of allowing 1100 election observers for 120 centres in Sylhet city, he said there is possibility of trouble in the polling centres due to the situation.
“Holding elections at an atmosphere of impunity and without human rights cannot be acceptable. The EC is showing negligence to take actions for breaking election rules by candidates,” Muhith, also chief adviser of the Nagorik Parishad, said.
Fourteen candidates are on full-fledged campaign while the incumbent mayor had been kept behind bars without any trial for over a year and a government agency filed a weak charge sheet against him and his wife only five days ahead of the city polls, he said.
“In the charge sheet, Kamran's wife has been shown absconding, whereas she is already in the campaign. It shows how the Anti-Corruption Commission is working and what kind of integrity they have in launching drive against corruption,” the former bureaucrat said.
Several candidates are running their campaigns even after 8:00pm violating the election rules but the EC has failed to follow its rules and regulations while the administration is also playing a very weak role, Muhith said.
He urged all to remain alert to foil any conspiracy.
Abdul Haque, convener of the Nagorik Parishad, detained mayor Kamran's wife Asma Kamran, and their son Arman Ahmed Shiplu also spoke at the press conference.
