Three to die for killing woman
Narail Additional District and Sessions Judge Court yesterday sentenced three people to death and two others to life-term rigorous imprisonment (RI) for killing a woman on August 8, 2005.
The convicts are Feroj Mollah, 48, of Pankharchar village in Lohagara upazila, Iqbal Sheikh, 35, of the same village, Daulat Fakir, 36, of Itna village in Lohagara upazila, Jarina, 40, widow of late Moksed Mollah and Shirin Akhter Mimi, 35, wife of Akkel Sheikh of the same village. Of them, Jarina and Mimi were sentenced to life term RI. Mimi was tried in absentia. Each of them was fined Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer one year more RI.
The convicts killed Rupa Khanam, 25, wife of Abdul Gaffar Mollah of Pankharchar village with sharp weapons at her bedroom at midnight on August 8, 2005. They killed her for protesting Jarina's illicit affair with Iqbal. Rupa died on the spot leaving behind a six-year-old daughter Farzana and two-year-old son Mustahid.
Victim's father Abdul Mannan filed a case with Lohagara Police Station on August 9.
