Ex-BNP whip Moshiur's illegal building bulldozed
Jhenidah district administration yesterday demolished an unauthorised building built illegally by former whip and BNP lawmaker Moshiur Rahman, also president of Jhenidah district BNP, on 8 decimals of land of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) on the Sher-e-Bangla Road in Jhenidah town.
The former whip illegally occupied the government land during Four-party Alliance rule. After grabbing the land, the BNP leader built an offset printing press named Muktasamaj Printing Press and established an office of a newspaper named The Daily Muktasamaj there. He amassed a good amount of money giving other parts of the building as rent to people.
Moshiur was elected a lawmaker from Jhenidah-2 (Jhenidah Sadar and Harinakundo) constituency thrice. He went into hiding after promulgation of the state of emergency. There are many allegations of corruption against him.
Subad Kumar Kundo, a first class contractor here filed two extortion cases against Moshiur on September 16, 2007.
After 18 days of filing of the case, Subad was murdered in the district town. Police filed two cases against Moshiur with Sadar Police Station, one for murder and the other for illegal toll.
There are also allegations of tender manipulation, land grabbing and other corruption against him. During the Four-party Alliance rule, he allegedly amassed crores of taka by doing corrupt practices. No contractor allegedly got work permit without bribing him a good amount of money. He even allegedly misappropriated wheat and rice allotted for Food for Work Programme.
When contacted, Jhenidah Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abu Sayed Fakir said the demolition drive started at the initiative of RHD. The BNP leader had no allotment of the building, he said.
