Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran

Awami League Advisory Committee member AMA Muhith has said the government should immediately release Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, detained mayor of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC), who won the recent SCC mayoral polls. “The August 4 election results bring a clear message to the present government that has failed to control unusual price hike of essentials. The authorities should now take immediate measures for holding parliament elections without killing time,” he said at a press conference yesterday afternoon. Sammilita Nagorik Parishad, that ran the incumbent Sylhet city mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran's election campaign, organised the press conference at Ibrahim Smriti Sangsad office at Sobhanighat in the city. Muhith, who is also the chief adviser of the Nagorik Parishad, said, “The results are also a reflection of the people's opinion over the government's anti-corruption drive.” “Mayor Kamran won the elections although he had been kept behind bars without any trial for over a year. "The election result has already raised question on the justification of the graft cases against Kamran. It is also a message for those who are on conspiracy against the people's stance. “Rule of law demands transparent investigations and trial at a free and fair court. Just filing graft cases cannot make one guilty. "We want that the government release the elected mayor immediately to let him join his office for the people's cause,” Muhith added. Muhith said they would soon move for Kamran's release legally. Speaking at the press conference, detained Kamran's wife Asma Kamran urged the government to let him join the office to enable him to 'serve the city dwellers'. City AL acting chief Siraj Baksh, General Secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj, district AL President ANM Shafique and General Secretary Iftekhar Hossain Shamim were also present.
