Protect rights, culture of indigenous people
International Day of Indigenous People observed in Sirajganj
Leaders of indigenous communities at a discussion meeting here yesterday demanded proper government steps to protect the rights and culture of indigenous people.
The indigenous communities are still backward as they are not getting facilities like others in the field of education and job.
The social discrimination, allegedly due to lack of government attention has kept them deprived and backward, the speakers said at a discussion held at Sirajganj University College auditorium marking observance of International Day of Indigenous Peoples.
Organised by Bangladesh Adibashi Forum, the programme also included a cultural function, a rally and a colourful procession in the town.
Babu Nirmal Kumer Mahato, Sirajganj district unit president of Bangladesh Adibashi Forum, presided over the discussion meeting, attended by Deputy Commissioner Ashraf Ali at chief guest.
Among others, Police Superintendent Alamgir Rahman, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mozaffar Ahmed, Bangladesh Adibashi Forum secretary Sanjib Drong, Bangladesh Adibashi Forum central leader Dr. Gozendra Nath Mahato, Shushil Kumer Mahato, Babu Ashutosh Mahato and Sirajganj Bar Association President Abdur Rahman spoke at the meeting.
Earlier in the morning, Birendra Nath Onraw, president of Tarash Upazila Adibashi Bobumukhi Unnayon Sangstha, led the colourful procession brought out in the town.
About 2000 people from different indigenous communities in different areas of the district took part in the programmes.
