Trader shot by patrol police for 'bribe'
An onion trader, shot by a police man at Modhyapara Sunday night allegedly for refusing to give bribe, is being treated at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for bullet injury in the belly.
The trader-- Shafiul Hoque, 35, of Ramnathpur under Baderganj upazilasaid Sub-inspector Haider Ali and another policeman of Parbotipur police station intercepted him at Modhyapa at about 3:30 am yesterday when he was coming from Hilli land port with a tractor loaded with onion.
"SI Haider Ali demanded Tk 2000 from me as bribe for carrying onion at night."
"As I refused to pay him, the police officer opened fire on me and assaulted tractor driver Noor-un-Nabi and helper Mamun with rifle, injuring them seriously”, Shafiul said.
On information, police from Baderganj thana rushed to the spot and sent them to the Baderganj Upazila Helath Complex, from where Shafiul was sent to RMCH.
Mamunur Rashid, officer-in-Charge of Baderganj police station, when contacted, told The Daily Star that the incident took place at Modhyapa under Parbotipur upazila and that he did not know much about the incident.
When asked over cell phone, officer-in-charge of Parbotipur police station Habibur Rahman said, SI Haider Ali and another policeman were on patrol duty on Parbotipur-Baderganj road Sunday night. They were informed that a gang of robbers were passing through the road in a tractor.
He said, "Seeing the tractor coming from Modhyapara, they asked the driver to halt. As he ignored the signal and drove towards Baderganj, police opened fire."
The OC also admitted that the information might be false.
Tractor driver Noor-un-Nabi and his helper Mamun were being treated at Baderganj upazila helath complex.
