Sitakunda mayor-elect resigns from AL
Newly-elected Sitakunda Pourasabha mayor Shafiul Alam alias Nayek Shafi, also a local Awami League (AL) leader resigned from his party yesterday.
Shafiul handed over his resignation letter to Sitakunda AL president and former lawmaker Abul Kashem citing 'personal ground'. He also submitted copies of his resignation letter to the local Election Commission (EC) and the returning officer.
One cannot hold his/her party post after being elected, according to the new Local Government Elections Act. Shafiul ran in the polls race with support of the AL-backed Nagarik Committee.
