Speakers at a huge youth gathering yesterday called upon the young generation to play active role in eliminating corruption from the society by creating awareness among the people. The young generation, still away from any sort of corruption, can play vital role to resist it, speakers said at the huge youth gathering and concert titled “Jago Manush….Durniti Pratirodhe Jago' (wake up to resist corruption) at Satkhira stadium. Satkhira Sachetan Nagarik Committee Sanak (conscious citizens committee) a chapter of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and Satkhira Durniti Pratirodh Committee, jointly organised the function 'to encourage people especially the young generation in strengthening the ongoing anti-corruption movement'. “It is high time to fight corruption in order to build a prosperous country. Corruption must be criticised at all levels and there should be no compromise on it,” TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said at the gathering. “Corruption is our shame, corruption is our insult. It must be eliminated through logic rather than emotion. If we fail to check corruption, development of the country will face a serious setback," he said. The other speakers also urged the young generation to launch movement against corruption by creating awareness among the people with the slogans 'Jago Manush- Durniti Pratirodhe Jago' and 'Say no to corruption'. Widespread corruption in every sphere of life is threatening growth and development in the country, they said. Participation of the youth to resist corruption is very important as they are the future leaders of the nation, they said, adding that students can play a vital role in resisting corruption by launching movement and creating awareness among people. All including the members of civil society should come forward to root out corruption, they said. The gathering followed a concert where popular singer SI Tutul and local singers performed. Chaired by Satkhira Durniti Pratirodh Committee President Principal Matiar Rahman, the gathering was addressed by, among others, Satkhira Deputy Commissioner Md Kefayetullah, Satkhira Superintendent of Police Mirza Abdullahel Baqui, Satkhira Sachetan Nagarik Committee President Principal Asit Kumar Majumdar, and advocate Abul Kalam Azad. Several thousand people, mostly young, attended the function.
