Mayor-elect of Khulna City Corporation Talukder Abdul Khaleque has urged the government to take a lenient view to the current crisis prevailing at Mongla Port following abolition of the Dock Workers Management Board (DWMB) that threw over 3000 workers out of jobs.
In a press statement yesterday, he demanded payment of all dues of jobless dock workers immediately to redress their sufferings.
He appealed the concerned ministry and other authorities not to buy any more time to resolve the crisis.
Talukder Khaleque, a former lawmaker elected thrice from Bagerhat-3 (Rampal-Mongla) constituency said in his press statement that jobless dock workers were been passing their days in agonies and reeling under extreme poverty since abolition of DWMB.
Members of most of the families of dock workers have been suffering as they do not have any means to cope with skyrocketing prices of rice and other essentials, Talukder Khaleque said.
Meanwhile, an uneasy calm is prevailing at Mongla Port where a large number of security forces are deployed since August 1 following agitation programmes announced by dock workers to realise their dues.
