Pirates' leader of Sundarbans arrested
Police arrested a wanted pirates' leader of the Sundarbans on Thursday for his alleged involvement in kidnapping 10 fishermen for ransom from Dudhmukhi cannal in Sharankhola upazila recently.
Mohammod Abdul Awal,42, second-in-command of Raju Bahini was arrested from Mahila College Road in Mongla upazila, Bagerhat. Police recovered 25 live cartridges from his possession.
Earlier, coastguards rescued 10 fishermen from Dudhmukhi cannal on Tuesday.
Bandits numbering 200 raid fishing trawlers to loot fish, nets, money and personal belongings of fishermen in the Bay of Bengal and coastal belts, fishermen said. They scattered themselves in groups and carry sophisticated arms and speedy water transport to commit piracies. They hold fishermen hostage for ransom, they said.
Fishermen have become panic-stricken in the ongoing peak season of hilsa, said Sharankhola Fishing Trawlers' Association leader Abdul Huq Farezi.
