'Take initiative to tackle misuse of small arms'
Speakers at a daylong media workshop in the city have urged effective steps to stop misuse of small arms.
National Forum for Peace and Security (NFPS) organised the workshop on 'Challenges for Human Security from Small Arms and Light Weapons and Improvised Explosive Devices' at the auditorium of NGO Asroy in the city on Saturday.
Matters relating to the nature of problem about small arms and light weapons (SALW) and improvised explosive devices in Bangladesh and development of reporting techniques on the issue came up for discussion at the workshop.
Speakers stressed the need to identify national and international initiatives to tackle the problem of misuse and proliferation of SALW.
Small arms and explosive substances poses threat to social security as criminals can go away easily after committing murder and other crimes, NFPS Secretary General Syed Tamjid-ur-Rahman said in his speech as the president of the workshop.
Speakers at the function suggested that import of toy guns be banned to prevent its abuse by youths.
M Hifzur Rahman, development worker of NFPS, and Touhidul Islam, programme associate of SAFERWORLD, addressed the workshop, among others.
Twelve local reporters of national dailies participated at the workshop.
