70 high schools lose MPO
The government monthly pay order (MPO) of 70 secondary schools in six northern districts has been cancelled for showing 'very poor' performance in the SSC Examinations this year.
Twenty-four schools in Gaibandha, 16 in Panchagarh, 15 in Kurigram, nine in Rangpur, five in Nilphamari and one in Lalmonirhat district failed to get a minimum of five candidates passed, sources at district education offices said.
Following instruction from the education ministry, Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Rajshahi also issued letters to the institutions asking them to explain why their academic recognition would not be cancelled.
Many of the schools replied to the letter while quite a few did not.
As most of those institutions were established during the last few years on political consideration, feasibility was not verified, sources said.
It is alleged that a large number of inefficient teachers were appointed in most of those schools as the managing committees received good amounts of donation from them. Besides, several schools were set at very short distances from each other, resulting in insufficient number of students.
Of the 70 high schools, 37 are for girls and the remaining for boys and both.
