Satkhira Jamaat leader sued for 'corruption'

Jamaat leader Maulana Abdul Gaffar, also chairman of Kushkhali Union Parishad (UP), was sued by a woman member yesterday for alleged corruption including toll collection and bribery. Kushkhali UP member Hasina Banu, elected from reserved seats of wards 4,5 and 6 in 2003 filed the case with Satkhira Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court. Hasina said she paid Tk 3,000 to the accused who had demanded Tk 20,000 as bribe from her in exchange of work and sanctioning VGF cards and widow and elderly allowance. After hearing, the court asked judicial magistrate M A Syeed to probe the matter and submit a report by November 23, court sources said. On contact, Maulana Abdul Gaffar denied the allegations saying it a 'conspiracy' to defame him.
