Agitation by RU 'controversial' staff for job regularisation
Some 200 'controversially appointed' fourth-class employees of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday staged a sit-in in front of the administrative building demanding regularisation of their jobs.
They also demanded payment of dearness allowance and Eid bonus.
Earlier on Thursday the agitating fourth class employees kept RU VC Prof Mamnunul Keramat confined to his office for about five hours to press their demands.
Yesterday, the employees also kept the administrative building's main gate locked for about one hour, held a rally there and chanted slogans against the vice-chancellor and others high officials.
At a rally, they urged the chief adviser and the University Grants
Commission (UGC) chairman to take steps for confirmation of their jobs.
They demanded resignation of the VC for failure his alleged to confirm their jobs.
They announced that they would be continue the agitation to realise their demands. They brought out a procession on the campus and paraded its streets.
A large number of police men were deployed on the campus to avert any untoward incident.
When contacted later, the VC said that university authorities would look into the matter seriously.
The university authorities appointed 544 third and fourth-class employees against 255 vacant posts in 2004 in gross violation of the university rules. Jobs of about 300 employees were regularised during tenure of the BNP-Jamaat rule.
But the High Court stayed the recruitment following a case.
