'Imams can play vital role against Islamist militancy'
Speakers at a meeting held here yesterday urged Imams (religious leaders) to play a vital role in removing Islamic militancy from the country.
Rapid Action Battalion and Bangladesh Islamic Foundation jointly organised the opinion exchange meeting. Held at Shilpakala Academy auditorium, the meeting was presided by Patuakhali deputy commissioner (DC) Md Riaz Ahmed.
As Imams are respected leaders in society, they can create public opinion against militancy, they said.
Now-a-days, Islam is facing an image crisis due to wrong doings of a group of fanatics who are creating chaos in the country in name of establishing Islamic rule, they said adding, they are not friends of Islam.
Among others, Major Qutubur Rahman, second-in- command of Rab-8, Nizamul Haque, president of Patuakhali unit of Jatiya Imam Samity and others addressed.
