<i>Bid to name Magura road after Razakar finally foiled</i>
Attempt to name a road in Magura municipality after Razakar Sharif Amjad Hossain, has been foiled by freedom fighters and conscious citizens.
In early August, unknown people set up on the road a signboard containing the name of Sharif Amjad Hossain, treasurer of Magura Peace Committee (a body formed to collaborate with Pakistan occupation army) during the Liberation War, while an initiative was allegedly taken to officially name the road after the Razakar.
Local freedom fighters and political parties including JSD raised a strong voice against the move and the signboard containing the name of the razakar was removed on Wednesday night.
No road in Magura municipal area was named after razakar Sharif Amjad Hossain, said a press release signed by Magura municipality Mayor Abdul Gafur on Wednesday.
“Removal of the signboard containing Amjad's name is a victory of the freedom fighters in Magura. He was an infamous razakar and during post-liberation period he was imprisoned as an anti-liberation criminal,” said Khan Ali Reza, former commander of Magura district unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad.
He alleged that Mayor Abdul Gafur in connivance with Mihir Lal Kuri, a teacher of Magura Adorsho Degree College, tried to name the road after razakar Sharif Amjad Hossain alias Amjad Sharif.
Magura municipality mayor Abdul Gafur, however, denied Ali Reza's allegation and said, “Mihir Lal Kuri, who donated land for construction of the road, verbally proposed naming the road after Sharif Amjad Hossain but we did not approve the proposal officially.”
