<i>Puja boosts export of Tangail saree to India</i>
Sale of Tangail saree saw a boost on the occasion of Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Hindus, as the traditional product with its varied qualities and prices is attracting increasing number of buyers from home and abroad.
Indian traders are taking sarees from Pathrail, known as the 'capital' of Tangail tant (handloom) saree, through opening LC as the demand has recently increased in Indian markets, especially in West Bengal.
Several weavers in Tangail said they produce ordinary handloom sarees as well as costly ones with price range from Tk 200 to Tk 10000 and so, their products meet demand of people from all classes.
Bivas Chandra Saha, who came to Pathrail of Tangail from Shiliguri of India for buying famous Tangail sarees, told The Daily Star that a piece of Tangail saree easily sells at Rs 300 in Shiliguri markets while the buying price is Tk 300 at Pathrail market.
Ahead of Durga Puja, Indian traders bought some four lakh pieces of sarees from Pathrail, said Tangail Tant Saree Traders Association President Raghunath Basak.
Some 10 lakh pieces of saree were supplied to different city markets in the country including Dhaka before the Eid-ul-Fitre, as demand for the item increased greatly, he said.
He said the weavers in Tangail produce different qualities of sarees including suti jamdani, gas silk, tasar silk, soft silk, half silk, indri silk, khaddar etc.
Wholesaler Enamul Haque, who came to Pathrail from Mymensingh, said this year they are purchasing sarees in larger quantities as increasing number of people are preferring Tangail sarees to foreign ones.
Around 3,50,000 workers were employed in 75,460 handlooms in the district to meet the demand on the occasion of Eid and Puja, said sources of Tangail Weavers Rehabilitation Organisation.
