Many party bigwigs not seen at Eid reunion at his Bagan Bari
Former finance minister Saifur Rahman's much talked about Bagan Bari in Moulvibazar is lively again.
After 1/11, Saifur went to the Bagan Bari on Saturday (October-4) and arranged a Eid reunion for party men there on Sunday.
It is learnt that some senior BNP leaders of Moulvibazar did not attend the Eid reunion.
Before 1/11, the luxurious resort was the center of power in Sylhet region. Party leaders from the region used to go there for Saifur's blessings.
The house which used to remain abuzz with party man during the BNP heavyweight's presence while in power, remained closed after 1/11. None was seen there except the caretaker.
In the name of Eid reunion, Saifur held an informal meeting with party leaders from Moulvibazar and Sylhet, expressing his desire to contest the December 18 polls from Sylhet-1 (Sadar and Companiganj) again.
Meeting source said, Saifur also expressed his another desire about his elder son M Naser Rahman.
He wants Naser as a party candidate from Moulvibazar-3 (Sadar and Rajnagar) constituency again.
"My son Naser was a very good boy, but a few persons of Moulvibazar have spoiled him", Saifur said, according to meeting sources.
He said legal process is on to release Naser from jail.
Saifur however expressed his doubt about holding of the polls on schedule.
"If election is held, I am ready to contest", Saifur told the meeting. But it depends on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, he added.
Saifur said Sylhet BNP has been divided into two groups. It will be tough to face the election without unity.
He termed Ilyas Ali an 'impertinent person' and said he wants to 'reply through organisational activities'.
Meeting sources said it was attended by, among others, Sylhet City BNP secretary Nasim Hussain, former APS of the former finance minister and Jubo Dal leader Quyum Chaudhury, Sylhet BNP leaders Saleh Ahmed Khasru, Abeda Chaudhury, advocate Habibur Rahman, Dr Sharier, Mifta Siddiquee, Abul Kaher Shamim, Faruk Ahmed, Qumrul Hasan Shahin, Ali Ahmed Dobir, Moulvibazar district BNP secretary Fayzul Karim Mayun, its former secretary Juned Ahmed and Moulvibazar district BNP publicity secretary Bakshi Misbahur Rahman.
Md Fayzul Karim Mayun, also mayor of Moulvibazar, told this correspondent that Saifur Rahman came to his village home on the occasion of Eid. It was a gathering of many people to exchange Eid greetings, nothing else.
