Harbouring religious extremism causes instability: Menon

Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon yesterday said religion-based politics is responsible for creating instability and backwardness in Bangladesh that has been traditionally a country of religious harmony. Festivals lose their charm if people continue to suffer from poverty and uncertainty of livelihood, Menon said during his visit to different Durga Puja mandops in Babuganj upazila yesterday. As opportunity for practising religion-based politics is against the spirit of equal rights to all religious communities and citizens, it should be restricted during registration of political parties, he said. Religious institutions like churches, temples, mosques now needs protection of law enforcers and people willing to participate in programmes have to enter there after undergoing body search due to expansion of terrorism in the name of religion-based politics, he said. Bangladesh should return to its non-communal, democratic and discrimination-free foundations by defeating harmful activities of the evil communal forces, Menon said.
