New points-based system to ease migration to UK
Says British delegation
Members of visiting British parliamentary delegation from their home affairs committee yesterday said new points-based system will simplify migration to the UK and help genuine migration seekers from Bangladesh.
Sylhet city Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran welcomed the 10-member delegation at Sylhet MAG Osmani International Airport in the afternoon.
In the evening, they joined a seminar at a resort in the city suburb where a good number of people including educationists, immigration specialists and social leaders joined.
Bangladesh has a long-standing link on different fields with the UK and the Sylhet region is very much important in this regard since more than 90 per cent of the Bangladesh-origin immigrants are from the area, Keith Vaz MP, chairman of the committee, said at the seminar.
In March 2006, the UK Government published a Command Paper called 'A Points-Based System: Making Migration Work for Britain' that stated the UK Government's intention to introduce an Australian-style points-based system for immigration into the UK.
The new system, also aimed to simplify procedures by consolidating the many complex routes for migration to the UK into just five-tiers, will help the genuine migration seekers to the UK, delegation members said.
Tier 1 (for highly skilled migrants) of the points-based system was introduced in February this year while Tier 2 (for skilled migrants) and tier 5 (for temporary workers) will be launched in November.
