Central BNP team starts Sylhet visit tomorrow, a faction plans boycott
A central coordination team of BNP will start visiting greater Sylhet region from tomorrow to look into the organisational matters in four districts where the party has been suffering serious intra-party feud for long.
The 18-member team led by BNP Joint Secretary General Prof Abdul Mannan will visit Habiganj on October 12, Moulvibazar on October 13, Sunamganj on October 14 and Sylhet and hold meeting with the local bodies.
However, a major faction of the party leaders, mostly loyal to Sylhet BNP district chief Ilyas Ali, may boycott the Sylhet meeting, a few local leaders said, adding that the committee is yet to inform the office-bearers in Sylhet of their coming.
Four former lawmakers are among those planning the boycott, sources said.
Talking to The Daily Star last night, the deputy chief of the committee, former whip Fazlul Haque Aspia, however, said the committees in Sylhet city and four districts were duly informed of the matter and they had been asked to communicate with the upazila committees in time.
“We have no confidence on most of the 18-member committee members as they are well-known reformists and they had no role for the party at the crucial moments after the one eleven,” said Ali Ahmed, a member of Sylhet district convening committee.
“I did not get any letter regarding the meeting,” Sunamganj district BNP General Secretary former lawmaker Kolim Uddin Ahmed Milon, told The Daily Star last night.
In another move days ago, a team sent by the central committee held meetings with the BNP men in Sylhet, where party men loyal to former finance minister Saifur Rahman attended but the adherents of Sylhet district BNP chief former lawmaker Ilyas Ali boycotted.
Later the pro-Ilyas people staged a showdown in the name of Eid reunion on last Monday.
Their rivals announced holding a counter showdown today but it was later postponed.
