10-day ban on hilsa fishing Oct 15-24
A 10-day restriction on fishing of hilsa has been imposed from October 15 to 24, official sources said.
The Directorate of Fishing has imposed the ban along 7,000 square kilometre coastal, estuary and river waters to facilitate safe breeding of hilsa during peak breeding season.
The ban will be enforced from Shaherkhali to Haitkandi in Chittagong district, Uttor Kutubdia to Gondamara point in Cox's Bazar district, Uttor Tazumuddin to Poschim Syed Awalia in Bhola district and Latachapli of Kalapara upazila in Patuakhali district.
Lakhs of hilsa fishes proceed to coastal, estuary and river waters from sea to lay eggs during full moon, Fishing Directorate sources said.
District and upazila administration, naval force, coast guards, police and other law enforcing agencies have been asked to monitor proper execution of the restriction, official sources said.
Stern action will be taken against violators of the restriction, they said. First time violators of the restriction will be fined Tk 1,000 along with six months' imprisonment. Punishment will be doubled for repeated offence, they further said.
