AL's 'no' to JP secy Ruhul Amin in Patuakhali-1
Awami League (AL) in Patuakhali-1 constituency (Patuakhali, Mirzagonj and Dumki upazilas) at two meetings have decided that they will not accept Jatiya Party (JP) secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader as a 14-party alliance candidate in the area. All party men will boycott him, according to decisions held on Saturday and on October 8. The angered Local JP leaders, who urged local AL leader not to take such a stance in the interest of the alliance. At several Eid re-union functions in Patuakhali, Ruhul Amin Howlader declared that he would run in Patuakhali-1 constituency as an alliance candidate in the upcoming parliamentary polls. After his declaration, local Patuakhali Sadar upazila AL leaders held a meeting on October 8 and those of Mirzaganj and Dumki on Saturday, party sources said. At the meetings, they claimed that Ruhul Amin has no popularity in the constituency. He got only 4,500 voted in 1996 parliamentary election and lost his security money. JP candidates also lost their security money in 1991 and 2001 polls, they said. The alliance will lose the seat in the coming polls also if he is nominated, they told the meetings, party sources said. They demanded an Awami League candidate in the area. Resolution adopted in the two meetings in this regard were sent to AL high command, the sources said. The meeting of Patuakhali Sadar AL, held at the party office, was presided over by its president Syed Habibur Rahman. Meetings of Mirjaginj and Dumki upazila units were held at the party office. On Friday in the evening, JP district unit held a press conference at the party office, where senior vice president Khairul Alam Mamun in a written statement said AL leaders are making propaganda against Ruhul Amin Howlader as JP's popularity is increasing in Patuakhali day by day.
