13 BNP-Jamaat men charge-sheeted

Investigation authorities yesterday pressed charges against 13 people including local Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abu Taleb Sardar and local Jubo Dal leaders Nazrul Islam and Zahirul Islam in the case for killing journalist Belal Hossain in Kalaroa upazila on September 14 in 2006. The investigation officer (IO) of the case, Inspector Subhas Chandra Biswas of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted two separate charge sheets against them to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court at Satkhira. The accused, local leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat, killed the journalist as he protested their felling down and taking away mehgani trees beside Satkhira-Jessore road, the IO said. The other charge-sheeted accused are Khoka alias Zahiruddin Habib alias Tapan, Montaz Ali, Abdul Kader, Golam Sarowar, Rafiqul Islam, Moslem Ali, Abul Kashem, Abdur Rashid, Abdul Hamid and Rafiqul Islam. Of them, all but one were arrested after the incident but they were released on bail granted by the High Court. The absconding one is Abul Kashem. Belal in his 'dying statement' disclosed the names of his killers, sources said. The victim's brother Ainal Hossain filed a case with Kalaroa Police Station against the accused on September 15. Later the case was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for investigation.
