Several hundred people including freedom fighters and teachers, students, officials and employees of Rajshahi University yesterday formed a human chain and held a rally demanding immediate arrest and punishment to killers of freedom fighter Sajjad Hossain. Identified cadres of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir beat to death freedom fighter Sajjad when he was distributing zakat and fitra among poor people on October 5. He fell in wrath of Jamaat-Shibir cadres for not donating the money to an institution run by Jamaat-Shibir men. Rajshahi University unit of Amra Muktijoddhar Santan, a platform of freedom fighters' children, organised the human chain on the premises of central library. Participants waved banners and placards, demanding punishment of Sajjad's killers and trial of war criminals. They urged the caretaker government chief to take steps for trial of Sajjad's killers under a speedy trial tribunal. Later, they held a protest meeting on the premises of the central library where former Rajshahi University vice chancellor Prof Saidur Rahman Khan attended as the chief guest. Condemning the heinous crime of killing freedom fighter Sajjad, he said if the killers go unpunished they will make fresh conspiracy against the spirit of our Liberation War, he said. He also expressed dissatisfaction for not punishing war criminals and killers of Bangabandhu during the long years. The anti-liberation forces are making a fresh blueprint to kill freedom fighters and progressive-minded people, speakers said at the meeting. They criticised police and concerned authorities for not arresting the real killers of freedom fighter Sajjad several days after the incident. They also demanded punishment of the Jamaat-Shibir cadres who assaulted freedom fighter Sheikh Mohammad Ali in Dkaha. They called upon the government to initiate trial of war criminals immediately and ban Jamaat-Shibir politics. They warned of a tougher agitation with general people if the killers are not punished. Prof Anando Kumar Saha, Prof SM Abu Bakkar, leaders of Rajshahi district unit of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Mahtab Uddin, Farhad Ali Mia, Rajshahi division freedom fighters coordinator Abdul Malek, slain freedom fighter Sajjad Hossain's son Nasim, his brother Enamul Haque, Muktijoddhar Santan RU unit convener Zinna-Al-Mamun, and leaders of different student organisations addressed, among others.
