'Ensure safe water in SW region'
Representatives of NGO AOSED and Water Rights Committee at a press conference yesterday demanded steps for ensuring rights on safe water in the southwest coastal region of the country.
They have also demanded inclusion of this vital issue as an election pledge in the manifesto of the political parties before joining upcoming national elections.
Water is a basic right of the people and it is responsibility of the state to ensure supply of safe water, Jayanti Rani Sarker, a member of Water Rights Committee, said at the press conference at Khulna Press Club.
She underscored the need for banning of shrimp cultivation in the ponds that are used as sources of drinking water, especially in rural areas of coastal districts.
AOSED is implementing a project to solve drinking water crisis in Dakope upazila in Khulna.
