AL demands all six JS seats in Rangpur
Awami League leaders in Rangpur in a strong rebuff to Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad's claim for 21 of 22 Jatiya Sangsad seats for his party candidates in greate Rangpur said he should not make such statements in the interest of the grand alliance.
The leaders made the statement at a press conference yesterday after discussing the issue at a meeting of Rangpur AL unit the day before.
The AL leaders said they discussed in detail their party strength in the region and feasibility of fielding 'good' candidates.
At the press conference, they urged Ershad to refrain from making such statement till seat sharing is settled after return of AL chief Sheikh Hasina.
Rangpur AL convener Abul Monsur Ahmed, joint conveners Mosaddeque Hossein Bablu and Rezaul Karim Raju, former party lawmaker Sha Abdur Razzak and Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhontu spoke at the press conference.
Abul Monsur Ahmed said, AL will demand six seats in Rangpur alone in the upcoming parliamentary election.
Ershad during a recent visit to Rangpur declared that Jatiya Party would field candidates in 21 of 22 constituencies in greater Rangpur if his party forms an alliance led by Awami League.
“We will not compromise in this regard”, Ershad had said.
Refuting Ershad's statement, Mosaddeque Hoseien Bablu said, “Formation of grand alliance is still uncertain. The matter will be settled after Sheikh Hasina returns.”
Bablu said, Rangpur district AL committee at its meeting on Tuesday adopted a resolution demanding all six JS seats in Rangpur if an electoral alliance is formed with AL. The resolution will be sent to the party central committee.
