Schoolgirls, guardians vow to fight early marriage, dowry

It was a different day at Baliadanga Islamia Girls High School where over 300 guardians and girl students, in a unique oath taking ceremony yesterday, vowed to fight women repression, early marriage, acid violence and dowry. Sachetan Nagarik Committee, a unit of Transparency International Bangladesh-TIB, organised the meeting and oath taking ceremony at the school in Sadar upazila as parts of its campaign to create awareness against the vices. Dr. Siraj Uddin, former principal of Chapainawabganj Government Women College presided over the function. Terming repression on women, dowry, acid throwing and early marriage as social crimes, speakers at the meeting vowed to prevent those. They called upon all to come forward to resist such crimes against women. Among others, Dr. Nur-E- Akhtar Zobeda of Sachetan Nagarik Committee, journalist Anwar Hossain Dilu, Mahbubur Rahman Mintu, Gouri Barman Situ, head master of Baliadanga Islamia Girls School Rustum Ali, Rafiqul Islam of TIB and Iqbal Hussain spoke.
