Tk 46.48 lakh Tobacco Looting
Almost all booty recovered, truck driver still hiding
Manikganj Sadar police yesterday recovered 153 more cartons of of looted cigarettes worth Tk 19 lakh from field at Bonparil and a shop at Hatipara Bazar in Manikganj Sadar upazila.
A covered truck loaded with cigarettes of well-known brands including Benson, Gold Leaf, Star Filter and Viceroy worth Tk 46.48 lakh was robbed and the truck helper was killed on the way to Pabna from Bogra depot of British American Tobacco Company on October 14, police said.
Earlier on Friday night, Rab and police recovered 114 cartons of cigarettes worth Tk 26 lakh.
After recovery of 114 cartons of cigarettes from shops of Nasir and Mosharaf at Bonparil Bazar and the house of Munnaf Dewan at Bongkhuri village under Sadar upazila on Friday night, Rab and police held Nimai Biswas, 55, Majed Mia, 35, Ali Ahmed, 21, Saiful Islam, 30, Haider Ali, 32 and Nazar Ali, 50, to ask them about the robbery and killing incident, police said.
Police recovered body of the killed helper, Abdul Bari, 32, hailing from Akashtara village under Sadar upazila in Bogra, from beside Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Muljan in Mainkganj on October 15.
Later Rab recovered the abandoned truck from Dhamrai in Dhaka.
The truck driver, Halim Sarker, 33, of Bodyana village under Sundarganj in Gaibandha district, went into hiding after the incident.
“We are trying to nab truck driver Halim Sarker, and Naju, Jalal and Nasir, who were mentioned by arrested persons as engaged in unloading the goods from the truck,” Assistant Superintendent of Police Kazi Moniruzzaman said.
