Rangpur University to begin classes in January
Education Advisor Dr. Hosain Zillur Rahaman formally launched academic activities of Rangpur University at a simple ceremony on the campus of Rangpur Teachers' Training College.
Appointment of teachers and admission of students will be completed by December and honours classes in six departments will begin in January, newly appointed Vice Chancellor of the university Dr. M Lutfar Rahman told this correspondent at the ceremony.
The university will open up a new era in northern districts, Hosain Zillur said at the opening ceremony.
“The chief Advisor declared in February this year that a public university would be set up in Rangpur. It is an example that such a major decision can be implemented in seven months”, he said.
He said Rangpur University will be an exceptionally beautiful and modern complex.
VC Dr. M Lutfar Rahman said angpur university is the outcome of a long drawn movement by people of this region.
In the past, no government kept their commitments. The caretaker government kept its promise, he added.
The VC said, "The university will be a centre for excellence. It will be an ideal institute. I seek cooperation from people for this."
Chief Engineer of Education Engineering Department Shahjahan Patwari said, the government has allocated Tk 100 core to build the university on 75 acres of land. Construction work will begin next month, he added.
Former VC of Jahangirnagor University Prof Dr. Amirul Islam Chowdhury, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Education AZM Shafiqul Islam, Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Abdul Ahad, former principal of Carmichael College Dr. Rezaul Haque also spoke in the function presided over by Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan.
The chief Advisor Fakruddin Ahmed after a Cabinet meeting in Rangpur on February 2 declared that a public university would be set up in Rangpur.

Earlier, the ministry decided to start classes at a rented complex. As there was no such big building, the ministry decided to hire a building of Teachers' Training College to run classes of 2008-2009 session.
