Maulana Bhasani university closed till Oct 31
Authorities of Maulana Bhasani University of Science and Technology (MBUST) at Santosh yesteday closed the university for seven days following a clash between two groups of students over demand for resignation of its Vice Chancellor Dr Prof Monimul Haque. At least 10 students were injured in the clashes.
All students were asked to leave hostels by 5 pm yesterday.
One of the injured students was admitted to Tangail General Hospital. The rest were treated at the university health centre.
MBUST Teachers Association President Dr AKM Mohiuddin told The Daily Star that students of Criminology and Police Science (CPS) and Environmental Science and Resource Management (ESRM) departments laid siege to the VC's office on October 19 and kept the VC and over 20 teachers confined for ten hours demanding introduction of Mmasters course from 2007-08 session.
Following the agitation, the VC submitted his resign letter to higher authorities on Tuesday but it was not accepted.
Yesterday, other students as well as teachers of seven departments held a rally and brought out processions demanding withdrawal of VC's resignation letter, saying the VC is honest and should stay in the interest of the institution.
The clash ensued after a rally when a student was beaten by rivals.
Being informed, a police team led by Tangail Police Station officer-in-charge Ashraf Hossain and Executive MRabiul Islam rushed to the campus and brought the situation under control.
Registrar Prof Nurul Islam Miah latyer told The Daily Starthat the university authorities declared closure of the institution till October 31 following instruction from Vice-chancellor Dr Prof Monimul Haque.
