Party men divided over ex-MP Akbar's candidacy

Rival factions of Sreepur upazila unit Awami League (AL) have continued mudslinging over former lawmaker Dr MS Akbar's possible nomination from Magura-1 constituency (Magura Sadar and Sreepur upazilas) for the next general election. One faction led by Sreepur upazila unit AL President Akbar Hossain Mian and former general secretary of district AL Molla Nabuot Ali have declared former lawmaker Akbar 'unwanted'. At meetings in different unions in the upazila, they criticised him for alleged link with Jamaat and BNP men and vowed to resist him in the constituency. On Thursday afternoon, rival party men at a meeting at Khamarpara Madrasa auditorium said they would work together if the party nominates any person other than Akbar. Akbar loyalists at a press conference at Magura Press Club auditorium on Wednesday blamed Akbar Hossain Mian and his political aides for 'tarnishing' the image of the party. They said Dr Akbar stills hold the post of party's district unit general secretary. Among others, district unit AL President Altaf Hossain attended the press conference. Earlier on October 17, Dr Akbar's opponents held a press conference at Sreepur upazila public library auditorium from where they declared the former lawmaker 'unwanted' in the upazila. On Tuesday, they held another meeting at Dariapur to oppose Akbar's possible nomination. When contacted, former lawmaker Akbar said, “I believe that those who nominated me earlier will also nominate me this time and opposition by a circle will not affect the process.”
