Protest against Lalon sculpture demolition continues on RU campus
Several hundreds students and cultural activists under banner of Sculpture Protection Forum yesterday staged a one hour sit-in demonstration on Rajshahi University (RU) campus demanding immediate re-installation of Baul sculptures at the airport roundabout in Dhaka.
The sit-in was staged as part of the forum's three-day programme announced earlier.
Later, they formed a human chain and held a protest rally in front of the central library. Speakers urged teachers, officers, employees and progressive people to launch a tougher agitation movement against the anti-liberation forces.
Speakers said communal forces are involved in a deep-rooted conspiracy to destroy the culture of the country and achievement of the Liberation War.
They also criticised the government for holding a meeting with Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid who was shown absconding by police. They criticised the government for not taking action against the fundamentalist forces who were involved in removal of the sculptures.
Fundamentalist forces are making a fresh blueprint to kill freedom fighters and destroy the Bengali culture, tradition and heritage, they said.
They urged political parties not to nominate war criminals for contesting general election and demanded of the government trial of war criminals through speedy trial tribunal.
This was followed by a cultural function.
